Children’s Illustrations and Imagery
Retirement in Hampstead in 1931 meant that at last, Edmund had time on his hands, but it wasn’t long before he found a new outlet for his artistic energy. With his young grandson John, to whom he was devoted, he explored design ideas of animals and children, some against an eclectic background of nursery rhymes. In this rich and other worldly style, Edmund created a menagerie of ideas, both wild and sublime, that conjured the feelings of wonder, joy and fear that are the essence of children's folklore.
